The series The Plague, set in sixteenth-century Seville, has turned the city into a film set, bringing emblematic monuments to the screen.
Seville is not only the scene of narratives like Game of Thrones; It also hosts Spanish super productions that recall the history of the city itself, as is the case of The Plague. The series by Alberto Rodríguez and Rafael Cobos, who already worked together on Marshland and El hombre de las 1000 faces, is inspired by the city when splendor mixed with a lack of hygiene, hunger, and epidemics in the sixteenth century.
The fictional series from the Movistar+ factory in its first season shows more than 130 real locations in Andalusia and Extremadura, many in Seville. Some of them are the Port of Seville, the Cathedral, the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold), the Guadalquivir River, The Alcázar of Seville Royal Palace - which has already served as the setting for Game of Thrones - the Royal Artillery Factory, the Salinas House, the Town Hall and the Casa Pilatos.
For the promotion of The Plague, the rats, which spread the epidemic, have symbolically taken over the city. They can be seen in different parts of Seville shown in a golden color on the walls. Also for fans of the series, there is a complete route of the most emblematic places that are seen on the screen. Fans will find a QR code on the monuments that offer a brief explanation of the history of each one.
Beyond the city, the production has also sought locations in the towns of Carmona (Convent of La Concepción) and Alcalá de Guadaíra (Hacienda Martín Navarro).
This historical series, a whole blockbuster with a budget of 10 million euros, tries to reflect a real image of Seville of that time, the starting and entering point for trade with America. Besides, it does so right at the moment when splendor walks hand in hand with unhealthiness, garbage, epidemics, famine, and floods.
You're still not following the adventures of the actors Pablo Molinero, Paco León, Patricia Lopez and Manuel Solo on the screen? In total there are approximately 190 characters and a technical team of 400 people in the filming of the first season.
